Class Log - Monday, March 27th, 2017

We started out the class with the notecards, the question being "what is the difference between revising and remixing?" Then we proceeded to listen to the poem of the day, which was Peacock At A Garden by Jayme Ringleb. Caitlyn then reads the log about last class and how my presentation was cool but no one believes it. After that we heard the titles of our classmate's reflections - what we got out of it was to be original and not basic when pitching to the class. Haley and Caitlyn lead discussion; Haley talked more about remixing and Caitlyn talked more about revising. We were then asked as a class about revising and remixing - and we came to a consensus that revising is not so much editing, because that's more the technical, grammatical small details, instead revising is changing up the whole thing while still keeping it the same product. Remixing just makes it into a whole different product. We can revise while remixing, and remix while revising. We then talked about SOAPS with a T:

  • S O A P S T

  • Subject – what is your subject for this genre? Not your whole research paper; focus in on one “message” or topic in your project

  • Occasion – time and place, when and where genre takes place – real world community, can be digital; pick a genre that fits that time and place (line dance Greek life – put it out before the event so people can see it)

  • Audience – who the text/genre is for; Is it people within the community? Is it people the community wants to draw in? Is it people the community wants to reach out to?

  • Purpose – inform, persuade, entertain; these are stupid but you need to state your purpose

  • Speaker – your “persona”

  • Tone – the way in which you say your message (changing the tone can turn it into a new genre - like from academic to narrative)

When we're doing our 3 genres, you can pick 3 different ones of each (I honestly didn't understand this when I wrote it down) but basically there are 729 options. Then everyone wrote down their own SOAPS with a T about their own mini genre presentation. Finally Jordan does her presentation on Romantic Comedies and we watched a little clip of The Proposal.
